More Than $85 Million Infrastructure Investment By ANC for 2019
FedEx Express also making significant infrastructure improvements for future growth

 

(ANCHORAGE, Alaska) - Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport (ANC) is investing $85 million during the summer of 2019 to support future growth. Projects scheduled for construction include the north-south runway project and a new airline gate.  This investment creates high-paying construction jobs and generates economic activity for Alaska.

“Governor Michael J. Dunleavy’s message, that Alaska is open for business, resonates with the airport, and we are making the investments necessary to grow existing business and attract new business,” said Jim Szczesniak, Airport Manager. “We are also excited that one of our main tenants, FedEx Express, is making a significant investment for the future in their ANC operation.”

Terminal Infrastructure and Security Upgrades 
The airport will invest $8.4 million in terminal infrastructure and security upgrades to accommodate future growth in peak passenger times and enhance airport security. ANC will remove and replace an existing passenger jet bridge and add the removed jet bridge to a new gate, B10, in the South Terminal in time for the summer of 2020. Gate B10 will allow for ground loading operations this summer. Escalator replacements, and baggage handling upgrades are underway. Airfield access enhancements will begin later this summer.

Runway 15/33 Rehabilitation and Widening 
This summer, the North/South Runway project will be completed. This part of the project will cost $63 million. The project includes resurfacing the runway with new asphalt, widening the runway to accommodate larger aircraft serving ANC, and replacing the runway’s lighting system.

Taxiway Foxtrot Reconstruction
Ground breaking on this $13 million taxiway project begins May 15. Taxiway Foxtrot is the only taxiway connecting the general aviation and executive terminals to the runways.

The runway, new gate, and taxiway projects are funded with airport user fees and Federal Aviation Association grants.

FedEx Express Facility Upgrade
FedEx Express will upgrade existing gates to accommodate growth in their Boeing 777F operations at ANC. FedEx Express will also install new in-ground electrical systems to provide power to the aircraft while parked at the gate. These new in-ground power systems eliminate the use of onboard auxiliary power units or traditional fuel-powered ground power units, reducing emissions and noise.

Constructed in 1990, the FedEx Express Anchorage Hub is one of the largest facilities in the company’s system, with more than 500,000 square feet of indoor space, several acres of aircraft ramps and a full-service hangar complex. The hub operates on a 24/7, year-round basis handling approximately 500 flights per month, performing two cargo sorts per day, and processing an average of 60,000 packages daily. Across Alaska, FedEx Express employs more than 1,350, and an additional 150 regulatory professionals.

The FedEx Express project is being funded by FedEx Express. No state general funds are being used.
